When planning a new painting I’ll often work out the interplay of light and shadow by drawing a number of tonal studies. This allows me to thoroughly “get to know” the forms before I start in on the canvas.
Sometimes, however, such as with “Fairy Clapping”, I never take the idea beyond the study and layout phase.
But as this drawing keeps niggling away at my psyche, I’m guessing that one day soon I’ll dive back in and start messing about with color studies. We’ll see.
