Dragons have historically gotten a bad rap. Those big teeth, big claws, and more often than not that big and out-of-control attitude haven’t helped improve their reputation one bit.
Nevertheless, there’s many a dragon that in no way goes looking for trouble and just wants to lead the quiet life.
It’s always trouble that comes looking for them.
I mean there’s all those fancy knights prancing about the countryside on their dandy horses. What’s that all about? And for goodness sake, what’s with the obsession with unobtainable quests? There’s surely better ways to impress the court’s fair maidens.
But with relentless monotony, knights keep turning up at the dragon’s cave brandishing swords and issuing ultimatums.
What’s a dragon to do? Certainly not just sit there while some adolescent in chrome plating pokes at them with a pointy stick.
Sigh. People swat flies, dragons swat knights.
And when the knight is unhorsed and the dust has settled, a self-respecting dragon can do no less than return the battered delinquent to its stone castle.
An occasional knight-dragon tussle might indeed be fun if it wasn’t all so boringly predictable. After three or four hundred returns, whatever novelty the task of vanquishing knights held begins to wear thin.
Really, all a dragon wants to do is snooze on its hoarded treasure and perhaps spend some idle moments working up the perfect fireball.
