On Fairy Wings
Few would deny that the physical world in all its rich and varied complexity can be captivating, mesmerizing, and stunningly beautiful. So much so that it’s easy to assume the physical is all there is to reality.
But it’s not that simple.
A Narrow Band
What we see with our eyes is such a tiny part of the whole. After all, our physical eyes use only a narrow band of the broad electromagnetic spectrum. Beyond visible light there is a multitude of invisible physical radiations; infrared, ultraviolet, x-rays, and gamma rays to name just a few.
So what’s beyond those? Universe after universe!
Layers and Realms
Simply put, we inhabit a vastly complex, multidimensional world.
You might say the world consists of a mishmash of layers stacked one on top of another. But it’s even more complex than that. Many of these layers simultaneously share the space of their companion layers, overlapping, interpenetrating and, at times, interacting.
There’s simply so much more to this world than what our physical senses register. And machines, no matter how advanced or sophisticated they might be or become, will ever remain incapable of registering the totality.
But if the physical plane occupies only one of many layers, what occupies the rest?
Discovering that secret is one of the grandest adventures we can embark upon.
The Fairy Realms
Did you know that believing in fairies, those diminutive and delicate people with elfin ears and extraordinary magical gifts, opens doorways leading into many of these other realms? When you fall in love with fairies your sensibilities begin expanding along with your awareness of subtle energies. Your love and belief serve to erode the barriers standing between you in the physical world and all the magical creatures arrayed on the other side.
But do you really want to remove such barriers?
Fear that Closes Doors
For most of us, the supernatural realm conjures up a myriad of conflicting feelings. When thoughts of that realm arise, they are often accompanied by a number of uncomfortable images. From our youngest years we’ve been bombarded with all sorts of contradictory stories about what awaits the unwary when they venture too far from the safety of the norm.
Lined up on one side in these fairy tales are the good, sweet, and pretty fairies. These are the classic winged variety that is generally described as offering protection and help, even if at times they are prone to playing silly pranks.
On the other side are the ugly, mean, and wicked. Meeting one of these legendary creatures of malice and hatred, even if only in a dream, is clearly not an encounter someone would want.
Of course as we grow older we’re quick to throw aside these beliefs and devote our precious time to more serious undertakings. Nevertheless, many adults never shuck their childhood conditioning and continue to harbor hidden fears about the mysterious forces at work in the world. In the company of peers they laugh and ridicule those who would openly state there’s more to life than the physical, but that stance often belies their constant inner battle with a bevy of persistent fears.
“What if it’s not safe,” they secretly and repeatedly ask themselves when confronted with anything out of the ordinary. “What if there are indeed wicked and magical elementals just waiting to do me harm?”
And as a result, the joy of opening one’s self to nature’s glorious hidden depths remains forever out of reach.
It needn’t be, though.
Of course books that compile folklore repeatedly tell us that, just like humans, fairies are either good or bad. And we accept that statement with nary a question. Because it’s written repeatedly in plain, black and white text, it must be true, right?
Not so quickly.
You don’t need to read much folklore to realize that a good proportion of fairy legends revolve around either methods to protect oneself from a fairy’s mischief, or how to stay out of their way. History often depicts fairies as unreliable, fickle, and at times downright malicious. Many of the traditional good wee folk, like the hard working kitchen hobgoblins, the playful pixies, or the supremely regal and helpful elves, later became slandered as wielders of mischievous or even evil powers. And all these unfavorable descriptions have wormed their way into our collective psyche.
To this day many of these prejudices and fears still color our thinking about all those things that might go “bump in the night”. Better left alone most think as they shudder in their boots.
Yet despite the prevalence of these old and tired reviews, there remains an incredible amount of goodness emanating from the subtle realms.
Attracting Good Fairies
As with any interaction you might have in the physical world, interactions with wee folk follow the universal rule of “like attracts like”. Choosing to hang out with low-life scum a good deal of the time will eventually land you in loads of trouble. On the other hand, raising the bar and choosing to associate with wholesomeness not only multiplies the existing good, it attracts more of the same.
In simple terms, then, when you fall in love with fairies your expression of love saturates the surrounding ethers with positive, wholesome energy. And that’s the sweetest nectar you could possibly use to attract the good fay folk.
The Good that Fairies Do
Even when people do embrace the idea of fairies, the fanciful web they weave around that idea remains but a pale reflection of a fairy’s true essence. Many like to think of fairies as beautiful, miniature humans flitting about flowers while trailing in their wake strands of glowing, magical dust. To many, fantasy dresses are an incredibly important fairy trapping, as are pointy ears, special glittery gossamer wings, sweet childish smiles, and lots of green foliage in the background. Add to the mix even more doses of magic dust plus endless absurd activities, and you’ve got the popular stereotype nailed down pat.
And at times that’s not a completely inaccurate picture. Fairies do have a knack of bringing an outrageous and exuberant joy to just about everything they do.
Nevertheless, and as silly as they can seem at times, fairies embody capacities and wisdom far beyond our comprehension. They exist in this world not to fulfill the role of pretty, magical ornaments, but instead to serve a fundamental role in preserving the subtle energy patterns that holds this world together. They do nothing less than uphold and nurture the myriad of subtle energy flows that form the lifeblood of the planet.
Energy Beyond Physical Laws
Fairies are energy beings to their core, and although at times they may adopt a physical appearance, their true form remains pure, vibrant energy that is intimately entwined with the physical existence of this planet. Fairies, or to use a more accurate term, nature spirits, can be likened in many ways to the inhabitants of the angelic realms; they share the sovereign duty of care-taking this entire world.
But the most jaw-dropping realization one can have about fairies is that their work is always play. They do everything wrapped in a nimbus of unbridled, rolling, and unstoppable joy. They tend, they care, they love, they nurture, and they always have the jolliest time doing it all.
The Fairies’ Gift
While you may not be able to see fairies with your physical eyes, everyone, simply everyone, has the ability to sense them in one form or another. Each time you quietly accept these hidden people, you coax them a little closer.
If you are at all creative, drawing fairies, building fairy houses, making fairy gardens, or writing fairy tales will encourage them even closer. And if for some reason you believe you’re not creative (ha, but you are!), then begin by enjoying the fanciful outpourings of other creative types. There are many out there who walk a delicate line between this world and the next, channeling their energies into an ongoing celebration of all things fay. Don’t be shy about availing yourself of their visions and uplifting gifts.
To commune with fairies, then, you might advance along any or all of these paths:
- Perhaps you know someone who builds fairy houses. Go check out their creations. Look at the houses from all sides. View them in all lighting conditions. Get down on your belly and spend time examining the constructions up close. Imagine what it would be like to be tiny, winged, and living inside such breathtaking faerie houses. Immerse yourself in the artist’s unique interpretation of fairyland.
- Dive into reading uplifting fairytales. The uplifting part is of prime importance. No dark or scary tales. Feel the energies that each word carries. Give your imagination full flight and allow the internal images to come uncensored.
- Search out and explore art of the fairy kind. This art form will offer you almost limitless avenues for inspiration. Absorb, savor, and exalt in a favorite artist’s visual extravaganza, and use it as a vehicle to transcend your falsely held sense of limitations. The images of certain sensitive artists can serve as gateways leading directly into the subtle realms.
- Sidestep everyone else’s personal interpretations of the wee folk and go straight to the source. This is the biggest of secrets. While effective at opening hidden doorways between worlds, however, it does demand a fair amount of persistence and courage to pull it off. To begin, plonk yourself down in any pure, natural environment and just let barriers fall away. Quiet down, open up, immerse yourself, and remain receptive. The fairies will in time sense your serenity and sincerity and respond.
- And if your inner spirit leans more to pleasure-seeking adventures rather than quiet and passive contemplation, perhaps this last approach would suit you best. Yes, with this approach you also need to at first find inner quiet and focus. But once you reach that state it’s then simply a matter of abandoning yourself to the fantasy of being near weightless and gliding about on fairy wings. Just thinking about it won’t work. You need to surrender all doubt and abandon yourself to the experience. Make it real. Make it realer than real. Fly!
And the payoff?
Any of these approaches will, if done correctly, elicit the full outpouring of any nearby fairy’s gift of joy.
