Fairies know that when you are especially quiet and attentive, you increase your chances of experiencing the life-affirming murmurings of the first spring buds opening.
My preliminary studies for a painting usually begin on the digital equivalent of paper.
After I’ve pinned down the outlines of the major forms, I often spend some time blocking in a representation of light and shadows. Here I’ve used pencil and cross-hatching to suggest some shading.
Such a drawing helps me understand in great depth all the intricacies of the forms. This gives me great freedom to experiment with color and mood once the painting begins.
